How Plants Make Food

Plants make their own food using sunlight, water, and air.

  1. Sunlight. The leaves catch energy from the sun to power the whole process.
  2. Water. The roots drink water from the soil and carry it up to the leaves.
  3. Air. Tiny holes in the leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air.
  4. Food and oxygen. The leaf turns it all into sugar to eat and breathes out fresh oxygen for us.
Did you know? Plants are the only living things that can make their own food, and almost every animal depends on them to do it.
