The Plant Life Cycle

From a tiny seed to a flower, and back to a seed again.

  1. Seed. A whole baby plant packed inside a tiny case, waiting for water and warmth.
  2. Sprout. Roots reach down into the soil while a little shoot pushes up toward the light.
  3. Seedling. Leaves unfold and start making food for the plant from sunlight.
  4. Flower. The plant blooms! Bees and butterflies carry pollen from flower to flower.
  5. New seeds. The flower makes seeds that ride the wind, water, or passing animals to new ground, and the cycle begins again.
Did you know? Some seeds are very patient. One lotus seed waited more than 1,000 years and still grew into a healthy plant.
