States of Matter

Everything around you is a solid, a liquid, or a gas.

Three panels showing ice as a solid, water pouring as a liquid, and steam rising as a gas
  1. Heat it up. Warmth melts ice into water, and boiling turns water into steam.
  2. Cool it down. Cooling does the reverse: steam becomes water, and freezing turns water back into ice. Same stuff, different state!
Did you know? Water is the superstar of matter: you can see it as a solid, a liquid, and a gas in your own kitchen, all in one day.
